Have you ever wondered about what it takes to make a sandwich? I mean REALLY make a sandwich?
You may be thinking that it's dead easy. Just nip down to the shop, buy some bread, some butter and a few fillings, and Bob's your uncle.
But what if that wasn't an option? What if you couldn't buy the bread but you needed to bake it yourself? And don't even think about buying the wheat - you'll need to grow that and grind it yourself. What if you needed to churn your own butter after milking your own cow? What if you needed to grow your own vegetables? And butcher your own chicken? And to top it off, what if you needed to extract you own salt from sea water?
All of a sudden the simple task of making a sandwich doesn't seem quite so simple, does it?
Andy George runs a YouTube channel called 'How to Make Everything'. A little while ago he made a video where he set about doing just this. The video below shows his attempt at making his of sandwich from scratch. In total it took him 6 months and cost over £1000, and he described the resultant sandwich as 'not bad'.
The point is that even the simplest of things like a sandwich takes way more than most of us ever think about. And yet, because different people can each play their part, we can all eat our sandwiches without needing months of work and thousands of pounds invested up front.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE THE OASIS CENTRE WORK?
We know that the Oasis Centre is a lot like Andy George's sandwich. If any one of us tried to do it all by ourselves then we would get nowhere fast.
At Oasis we love to say that Every One Counts. We know that this is true of our clients. Many people who walk into the Oasis Centre have been abandoned and rejected, and we want to provide them a safe place that values and cherishes them, where they can feel at home and make a unique contribution.
Equally, we know that every one counts is the secret behind what makes the centre work. Not everybody is a in position to contribute in the same way. Some volunteer. Some pray. Some donate. Some spread the word about the work that we are doing. But every single person who is standing with us plays a unique part in making the magic happen.
This is why we have created the Oasis Community - and we would love for you to join us. The idea is that you let us know that you are standing with us by popping your email address in the box below, and we will keep you up to date with all that is going on: stories of hope, latest developments and opportunities to get involved.
What are you waiting for? It's as easy as making a sandwich.
